A scalp problem often reads as a hair problem
A tight, tender scalp, visible buildup at the roots, or hair that looks flat no matter what is used on it, tends to get treated as a hair problem when it is really a scalp problem underneath. The Japanese Dry Head Spa at Tulum Spa works the scalp directly rather than the hair sitting on top of it, and it is waterless on purpose: water added at the start of a scalp treatment dilutes the serums used through the rest of the session before they have had a chance to work.
At $120 for 60 minutes, it is one of the shorter appointments on the menu, but the scalp, neck and shoulders hold onto tension in the same way the rest of the body does, and this is a genuinely Japanese treatment brought to Los Angeles rather than a Western scalp massage with a new name attached to it. Booking is appointment only at 13360 W. Washington Blvd., inside KILLER HAIR salon on the Del Rey and Mar Vista edge of Culver City, with only four clients taken into the studio each day.

Waterless scalp therapy, step by step
The session opens with organic phyto stem cell serums worked into the scalp, followed by ozone steam and an oxygen serum infusion to carry those serums in further. From there Tomo uses guasha and high frequency combing across the scalp, tools more often associated with facial work than hair care, before moving into a slow, rhythmic massage that runs from the scalp down through the neck, shoulders and back. None of it involves shampoo, water or a sink, which is the whole point of calling it a dry head spa rather than a wash and scalp massage add-on at a hair salon.
Tomo was born and raised in Japan, where her family ran a traditional hotel for five generations, and two of the estheticians on staff, Mina and Aki, are also originally from Japan. The head spa is drawn directly from that background, not adapted from something else and given a new name for the menu.
Chapter 03
Where the head spa fits around a facial
On its own the Japanese Dry Head Spa books as a 60 minute appointment at $120. It can also be added onto another treatment as the Add On Dry Head Spa, $40 for 20 minutes, for clients who want the scalp work folded into a facial they are already booking rather than a separate visit on a separate day.
For a longer combined appointment, the Delux Spa Treatment bundles the head spa with the Hydro Diamond Facial and a hand treatment into one 105 minute session for $230.
